Snow is in the AirThe sky this morning was nowhere near as beautiful as it was yesterday. There was no sunrise but there were a few flakes of snow falling. I was wondering if it would turn into something that would stop me going into work but it didn’t look too promising on that count. So I managed to navigate my way around cars that were parked awkwardly and get off my estate to make my way into work. By the time I arrived the snow had stopped falling.

The sun did peep through the clouds around lunch time but just after that the eerie fog we often get around the building, descended in the distance and rolled it’s way towards us.

When I left for the evening the fog had lifted and I could feel snow in the air. By the time I had reached my car a few flakes had started to fall but by the time I got home it had changed it’s mind again.  I wonder if it is going to sneak up on us overnight?

Your oak tree reminds me of A Man for all Seasons. So dependable, sturdy, fascinating, always beautifully ready for whatever the day will bring, and never disappointing. Hail to Chérie’s tree!

I love that tree, I do so want to capture it with the snow on again. But the snow keeps doing sneaky night time falling and melting by morning!

Snow is sneaking up on us all around at the moment!

It would be interesting to determine the age of that fine Oak and only the trunk diameter at shoulder height is required.

This can be determined without the trespass you were worried about, utilising the advantageous depth to your back garden.

From the house, sight two upright 6″ nails tapped into the top of your fence panel. Adjust the nails until they are in line with the trunk when you are furthest away. This will almost suffice as a direct caliper measurement.

Now measure the distance between the two nails in inches and multiply by 22/7. The result is the Oak’s age in years.

I don’t think I am agile enough for trespassing over that fence.

Doesn’t the distance from the tree to the measuring point have any bearing on the result?

      • MTG says:

Yes. If the Oak is close to your fence (as it appeared to be in a previous pic), error is minimised over the unusual length of your back garden.

The back garden is 40ft long there is a gap between the fence and the Oak tree but I am not sure how much. I would need to investigate!

We are in the middle of some mayhem – roads ans bridges closed. Hope you get some, Cherie.

I loved your pics :-) We have had a very light sprinkling this evening. I have been behaving rather oddly to try and get some pics of my back garden and the oak tree (in the dark) from my upstairs window before the snow melts.

  5. BY London standards we have lots of snow with more to come
