A Sunny Day by the RiverI am currently having a relaxing day after my long weekend in York. I stayed in a nice hotel that was away from the hustle and bustle and just on the edge of town, but with all the attractions easily accessible by foot. Yet again I managed to get a free room upgrade from a standard room to a superior room. The hotel was nice and relaxing and had it’s own courtyard garden and also a free car park, so I didn’t even have to worry about my car.

On arrival the city was packed and there were people of all shapes and sizes wearing some very strange attire. I think the weather had something to do with this, but also there seemed to be a lot of hen parties and the carnival was due to take place on the Sunday. It made Brighton look very tame in comparison. After the glorious sunshine on my first afternoon, the next few days were cloudy and rainy. By crafty planning I did manage to visit those gardens and stately homes that I promised myself without getting rained on. The following are some of the places I visited, I will be posting more about them soon:

  • The City Walls
  • Clifford’s Tower
  • Burton Agnes Hall
  • York Minster
  • York Museum Gardens
  • The Castle Museum
  • The Blue Bicycle
  • Hardwick Old Hall
  • Hardwick Hall

But for now I shall be sorting through the photographs that I took, there are nearly 600 of them…

Yep, Saturday night in York is a risque adventure for the man without chaperone.

Concealed along its narrow streets are Hen parties awaiting the unsuspecting. At any moment a scantily clad lady will emerge from the shadows of a shop doorway, drawing a very strange looking water pistol with intent and a knowing leer.

Crowds of girls like that = scary!!!

However I did get approached by I guy whilst I was crossing the bridge on my last evening in York!

    “The Blue Bicycle”?

I am hoping the actuality offered more than the name promised; but if it’s the sort of thing you are into I’ve got a Black Bicycle ready for viewing up here (£10 Entry fee plus a minimum £5 spend in the coffee shop, aka the kitchen).

Ahh! the blue bicycle, I can’t complain it delivered what it promised and it was delicious :-)

Well I do have a red bicycle here but I think it would make boring viewing… You might charge me a fee for exiting the exhibition site! As for minimum spend in my coffee shop – friends are always welcome – no fee ;-)

“Friends are always welcome – no fee”… To a Scotsman that all sounds like a very strange way to behave indeed. Cultural diversity though – each to his own, or something like that. My motto is more something like “Piss off everybody, and by the way you owe me five quid.”

I thought the word free might be a strange concept to you ;-)

Now I come to think of it perhaps I should start charging house guests, it might keep the unwelcome ones away…

We’re getting ready for one such weekend coming up, Cherie. So glad you had a chance to get away.
