Throughout antiquity the cedars of Lebanon were prized above all other trees. Their fine wood was strong, straight and wonderfully scented. It was always the first choice for any temple or palace, and top value in trade was paid for it. These trees helped give the Phoenicians a high place among other nations, and became the symbol by which they and their descendants were known.

“……wonderfully scented” sums it up perfectly.
I am a ’secret’ wood sniffer, and cedar I can detect a mile off.
It is not much use though in my workshop. It is really only a wood for decoration and I can’t think of a single time I have found a use for it.
I used to work at Taplow Court, the estate next down the Thames to Cliveden.
Lord Desborough planted a “Cedar Walk” along the ridge above the Thames and when he entertained VIP’s they were invited to plant a new Cedar. Most of the trees had a small plaque saying (ie “Planted by King of Siam”) who planted it and when.
I may research it and do a blog.
Fascinating information about Taplow Court. I like the idea of VIPs being invited to plant a tree. I would love to see a post on that
What unusual and beautiful trees. I’ve never seen the likes of them before.
They are very beautiful aren’t they?
I swa your blog title and knew it had to be the ones from Attingham. I love those trees
They are amazing aren’t they? Perhaps we we will bump into each other at Attingham one day
For those who can accept that one variety of tree is more beautiful and ‘…..prized above all others’….. should be equally at ease with my suggestion that Mary Ure was more striking and had more of whatever Monroe had.
All trees are beautiful, majestic and magical
Ahhh. So THAT’S what they look like. It’s interesting how we can hear a phrase all our lives and not have a clue!
I am privileged to have some quite close to me
That was interesting, something I did not know. Hope your internet and all things related are back in working order. Must have been scary when everything went off.
Have a great weekend ahead.
I need to sort out my network connections over the weekend they are still not working properly…
I hope you have a great weekend too. Looking forward to some photos from you
