Belsay Castle has a completely different look a feel about it than the hall that was built to replace it. On Christmas Day in 1817, Charles Monck and his family moved from Belsay Castle into the new hall. Following their departure the Castle gradually fell into disrepair. The 14th-century tower still dominates the castle.
This is one of the best-surviving examples of a peel tower – a regional type of fortification built by rich families in the late Middle Ages to defend themselves during violent times on the Anglo-Scottish border. *
The Middleton coat-of-arms are displayed above the porch along with the inscription: THOMAS MIDDLETON AND DORATHY HIS WIFE BVILDED THIS HOUSE ANNO 1614.

Thanks JD. If you say they are good they must be OK because you have seen the place for real
Speaking of Middleton, I bumped into Kate Middleton’s parents, Michael & Carole Middleton in Chelsea, London about 3 weeks ago!!!!
I couldn’t believe it…
Many years ago, I also bumped into Prince William while I was walking along Pall Mall.
But I haven’t met the Queen yet.
You seem to be turning into a Royal spotter
I have seen celebrities out and about and the owners of stately homes, but never any Royals…
Wouldn’t fancy taking coal up to that fireplace! lol!
I think that might pose a bit of a problem today
Superb and inspirational pictures.
Thank you
