I would never tire of visiting this Castle. Even partly in ruins, it has so much charm. That smiling face really adds to it. Most of the time, what we see sculpted in old buildings (even cathedrals) are some frightening gargoyles. This one is really inviting. Great photos, Cherie. As always.

Hi Cherie….i like your photo of the arched gate with the ivy along the old wall and across the arch very much….i would like to know more about the smiling face sculptured onto the wall….a very good presentation….thanks for sharing Belsay Castle with us….peter:)

I am glad you enjoyed the castle :-) Unfortunately I don’t know anything about the face in the wall, but you have now made me curious about it too.

    Love archways and scenes beyond.

  7. I see there are quite a few monkey puzzle trees there!
Did the monkeys attack the castle in the past? Ha! :D

    • CherryPie says:

I was always told that if a monkey got into the tree he would not be able to get out so maybe they were placed there as a precaution ;-)
