My Date with Harry Has Ended

I went to see the final instalment of Harry Potter at the cinema on Saturday.  The film did the book justice and there was some powerful acting that brought the scenes to life.  It was well worth the wait.

Before the film I spent a busy day in Birmingham.  I had a good old browse around the books in  Waterstones but was only tempted to buy one.  It’s unexpected appearance in the store made me smile because it was connected to conversations with a friend.  Then I went to Jessops to check out a macro lens option for my camera.

The assistant who initially helped me with my query, passed me on to another assistant who also owns the Lumix G2.  He got the lens out and there were a lot of problems with battery and memory card.  The G2 would not give a demo.  The lens had to be tried out on a closely related camera instead….  The macro shots were amazing!!  It is a Leica lens which is the equivalent of 85mm in DSLR terms.  Sorry I am getting a little bit techie there :-/

Whilst I was exploring the camera with the assistant another couple came and stood close by and were interested in the demonstrations.  It turned out that they had come in specifically to check out that very same lens!!  They had the G2 as well.  I joked that we were obviously having some sort of a G2 convention.  The assistant then joked that we could set up a club.  The other couple left after the demo and I arranged for lens ordered in to the shop because they only had the display lens available.  The assistant was a little unsettled by the co-incidence of two lots of interest in the lens at the same time when there hasn’t been much interest at all in the lens before…

I think it was meant to be, it was part of the patterns of the day and the price of the lens had come down considerably since I checked it out in a local store last week.

That was followed by an amazingly brief visit to a gentlemen’s outfitters.  Don’t ask ;-)

Before leaving the city for a meal and the film I had a quick visit round Birmingham Museum taking in the Staffordshire Horde, the Acropolis model (amazing) and the and near and far east exhibitions had something to interest me (so what is new there) ;-) .

PS: The lens should arrive on Wednesday hopefully :-)

  1. Excellent. I hope you find the macro lens as useful as I find my macros. Can you get a ring flash or other suitable macro flash for it. If you take a lot of close ups it could be worth your while

Thanks for the advice :-) I think it is possible to use a flash that isn’t specifically for the camera, I will look into it. It is just lenses that are a problem due to being compatible with the smaller format, the distance between the mirror and lens is different. The is a way round it, but It makes things more complicated.

a sudden rush on Leica lenses?
synchronicity, that’s what that is :)
    all is explained here-

Thanks for the link :-) I was thinking along those lines. The whole day went like that ;-)

Hopefully the photos will be worth the wait…

I think the clue was in ‘brief’ visit. :)

Cherie, I so look forward to seeing all your shots with the new lens…and truly, you don’t need to do what I do ;) In fact some of mine are to protect my knee, LOL. Besides, you will just take the most fabulous flowers shots which will hopefully mean that you won’t need to crawl around in mud! Glad to hear you had a lovely day…I have yet to see the film!

    • CherryPie says:

Thanks Chrissie, I hope I can do the lens justice :-)

I think if did some of those things you do I would need a crane to get me back on my feet ;-)

As you know I love to take photos of flowers, but I hope to capture a few bees as well. I do sometimes crawl around in the mud, because I like to take photos of flowers from ground level. A sort of bugs eye view of them ;-)

  6. Did you have your hair cut?
Looks shorter – ah summer look! ;)

Since I´m getting acquainted with my macro lens after 1-1/2 years, Cherry, I´m very excited for you. Have fun!

I have yet to see the 2 HP installments of the last book but will definitely get to it one of these days! I loved the book.

    • CherryPie says:

Thanks Ginnie, I am really looking forward to it. Hopefully I will get it tomorrow. The last film is brilliant, some really good acting.

You’re a Jessops fan too. I always go back there. A certain high street shop promises cheaper but the expertise is sometimes only great for the novice.

I do always shop at Jessops, although on this occasion I am having an ongoing bad experience in supposedly one of their best stores. Hopefully it will be resolved tomorrow.

I shall always stick to my local Jessops store in future, they are a lot more helpful and efficient.
