That right hand of his, did not really strike me as the hand of a courageous, conquering Roman warrior. It reminded me more of rather refined ladies in a Bath Teashop, sipping Earl Grey and having a gossip.
Lovely photo, but…..you didn’t explain why this made you glad.
The statue reminds me of a posed photograph.
The photo itself doesn’t make me glad. The ability for me to explore history and heritage makes me glad. The fact that the history and heritage is there makes me glad.
Reason No 94 to be glad?
I love his boots!
Can you see yourself wearing them?
As Bernard says, it’s his right hand, hanging there like a dangling participle.
Striking an elegant pose
The statue says to me, secure the Empire for Christianity or have another session with oil and strigil… decisions decisions! I am with you wholeheartedly on opportunities to explore our past even when the past holds uncomfortable truths
I am sure he did a fair bit of both!
The uncomfortable truths often seem to be the most interesting…
Statues to me can be a bit boring but this one fascinates me everytime I see it like a piece of Art. It’s the direction of the eyes, the angle of the sword and that right hand.
The thing that annoys me most though is the consistently awkward background from the conventional viewing angles. It has to be said though that you have done a grand job to direct attention away from the distracting Minster to hanging the hand against a blue sky backdrop.
It is a difficult statue to photograph, especially with all the scaffolding that is around the minster at the moment.
