This twelfth century doorway gave access to the stairs that led to the monks dormitory. The shafts beside the doorway are of Tournai Marble from Belgium. Above the lintel is a ‘Tympanum’ on which is carved a scene showing Abraham about to sacrifice Isaac. The ram in a thicket, caught by its’ horn can just be seen to the right with the hand of God above. *
*Information from a plaque near to the doorway.
This is a fabulous monastery Cherie… it was difficult to make our the carving of the ‘Tympanum’ but your explanation helped a lot… thanks for your visits today and your courtesy with yesterdays Midnight Moonlight:)… you are a very kind. lady…peter:)
The carvings are rather weathered and difficult to see.
I really did like your Midlight Moonlight
It’s been weathered so badly, I can’t even see anything.
Where’s the lamb again?
To the right hand of God
It’s amazing how these features have stood the test of time … & ol’ Henry
It is nice to see the places that managed to get past that old rogue!
