A wise man, recognizing that the world is but an illusion, does not act as if it is real, so (therefore) he escapes the suffering.

A sometimes painful illusion, unfortunately, unless we can learn to deny the illusion of pain, which some Eastern mystics seem to do, actually, come to think of it

  2. Claude says:

I wish I could have convinced the sharp knife (which cut my finger instead of a carrot) that it wasn’t real. Maybe then, I would not have bled. Ah! well… Buddha has no tears for my problems. Good photo, Cherie. :)

    • CherryPie says:

I think Buddha was thinking wider than a cut finger.

Your comment does remind me when I was playing with a knife and carrot tops aged two and a half… I still remember the blood, but I don’t remember the pain. I do still have the scar on my thumb!

I like your photo of the blooming thistle Cherie… as for the world being an illusion:)… i have my doubts lol….peter:)

  4. Ginnie says:

It does make you wonder if it’s possible, Cherry…that Buddhist belief?

  5. JD says:

not just the world but the entire universe is an illusion :)
…if the most eminent of quantum physicists are to be believed

Sir James Jeans summed it up nicely-
“the Universe begins to look more like a great thought than like a great machine. Mind no longer appears to be an accidental intruder into the realm of matter… we ought rather hail it as the creator and governor of the realm of matter.”

    • CherryPie says:

It goes to follow that if the world is an illusion the universe is too…

But how did that great thought start the illusion and where did it come from? ;-)

  6. Claire says:

Now my first response is ‘now that is a bit of a get out clause’.
On second thoughts if it can save the suffering of man then perhaps it is the way forward………..still mulling it over. Good quote.

  7. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
    Life is but a dream.

I can’t believe that kids in the West are taught to sing such meaningful phrase at a young age!

    • CherryPie says:

There are lots of innocent childhood quotes and stories that mean so much more than they seem on the surface.

The problem is not many people think to explore the words and what they might mean.

  8. Another excellent quote Cherie

  9. Frida says:

It makes me wonder if it’s possible? Love the image.

  10. james higham says:

There were many such sayings in Monkey, of which I’ve collected a few dozen. Wisdom beyond.

  11. liz says:

    That is a strange quote!

I’m trying to catch up on blogs again.

Little Moreton looks like an incredible place. (Would make a good jigsaw …)

  12. Bernard says:

I have two bits on the top of my blog -
    1) “The world is a sad place, but wine and music blunt the truth of it.”
So I too, with wine and music, can “escape the suffering.” :)
    2) “The depressing reality of the present is in some way rendered more palatable when laced with heavy doses of nostalgia;
That it is a fantasy makes no difference, the pleasure of living in the past is that our dreams can be selective.”
So I also, choose the illusion rather than the reality.
“A wise man, recognizing that the world is but an illusion.”
    Wise old Bernard. :)
