Lindisfarne Priory

Originally home to the Lindisfarne Gospels and the site of grisly Viking attacks, a visit to Lindisfarne Priory is a great day out in Northumberland. Sitting offshore on Holy Island and reached by a causeway at low tide, the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful views from the priory make a visit here well worth the effort.

Lindisfarne Priory was an important centre of early Christianity, and the home of St Cuthbert. Today you can marvel at the ornate carvings on the extensive ruins of the monastic buildings and enjoy the serenity that first drew the monks here.

Amazing that some of those walls are still standing, after all those years. It looks very majestic.

    Church history.

It’s a shame that the tide times give enough time for a look around, a spot of lunch and a walk to the castle. The remainder of the time is usually taken up with either a tour of the castle, a shortened walk around the island (to get attacked by the terns!) a spot of boat or upturned boat shed photography, an ice cream and a sit at the bay or a visit to the Priory. Sad to say I’ve only managed this once and I can’t remember when that was.

We had intended to walk along the shore after we had gone round the priory. But after a spot of lunch, which was crab sandwiches for me we decided on a plan B on the mainland instead.
