Wells Cathedral

As is often the way we set off on our travels slightly later than intended. Along the way we stopped off at a garden centre for a cup of tea, it wasn’t quite time for lunch and the menu choice was limited. We were almost in Wells and it was well past lunch time when we saw a sign advertising a book barn and cafe. The cafe turned out to be vegetarian, the food was freshly prepared and delicious. I opted for tomatoes and basil cooked in olive oil on thickly cut toast. The book barn was nowhere near as tempting as the food. I came away empty handed.

The Bishop's Palace

Afternoon Tea

We traveled the last few miles to Wells, spending a couple of hours viewing the cathedral and bishops palace from the outside before making our way to our B&B Stoberry House. We were shown to our delightful room before being served with afternoon tea in the garden. The owner of the B&B came to greet us and gave us lots of hints and tips and some handy leaflets so that we could enjoy Wells with ease, including the best place to park (at the bottom of the long drive) to walk into town. A sweet cat came to say hello and we were informed that she was Monty and that she like to accompany guests around the garden.

Monty

Stobbery House

After we had finished afternoon tea we took advantage of the sunny weather and set of to discover the garden. As we walked down to the lower part of the garden Monty joined us, even leading us to a spectacular view of Wells cathedral. It was soon time to go back to the room to freshen up whilst enjoying a glass of sherry from the honesty bar. We made our way to the bottom of the long drive, parked the car, carefully navigated the cattle grid by foot and walked into town to the Italian restaurant that we had booked earlier in the day. Wells was a little quiet so we made our way back to Stoberry House where we enjoyed a glass of chilled wine whilst chatting to  a couple of other guests about politics and Brexit.

When we returned to our room, the bed had been turned down and there was a cute goodnight plate containing book lights, Love Letters and sweet dreams pillow spray. The bed was so comfortable that I drifted off to sleep very quickly :-)

your composition of the cathedral is superb Cherie… i love the tea tray and the cat on the boat bench… but with all of that fancy stuff beside your bed with LOVE LETTERS… you weren’t supposed to drift off to sleep very quickly :-)

That is one special B&B, Cherry. I hope you left a GREAT REVIEW so that others will find it. :)

It all sounds wonderful. I do like the seat shaped link a long boat with Captain Monty firmly in charge.

  4. That B&B sounds a real treat. We love Wells – the cathedral and the bishops’ garden are just perfect. And you have got some wonderful shots there.

a charming post, CP. i loved the opening shot, the sunlight really accentuates the various features and i like the shot of the tea set too. i like the view of the Stobbery House.

  6. Sweet dreams pillow spray?
Did it smell like Eurythmics? ;)

One breakfast menu sounds seductive, anyway. Did you try the Stoberry Special Whisky Porridge served with apple, cream and a generous tot of whisky? If so, it was hopefully a Glenturret.
