D Day Landings - Day 1

This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. To commemorate the occasion I am taking part in the ‘Race the Distance ‘ 50 mile virtual walk along the beaches of Normandy where the landings took place.

The D-Day landings of 6 June 1944 was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Along with the associated airborne operations, it marked the beginning of the liberation of France and western Europe.

D-Day was a monumental campaign to rid Europe of Nazi horror, and the 80th anniversary of this remarkable operation deserves the recognition and gratitude of our country.

The beaches were given the code names UTAH, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO, and SWORD. The invasion force included 7,000 ships and landing craft manned by over 195,000 naval personnel from eight allied countries. Almost 133,000 troops from the United States, the British Commonwealth, and their allies, landed on D-Day.

I am starting my challenge early so that my medal arrives before 6th June.
