PS: I have no idea why the pics won’t load anymore…
If you click on the link you can see them on Flickr.
They are always so fierce looking!
A lot of them are although on some cathedrals such as York there are some comic ones.
These look very well-preserved, Cherie. So many in this country are weather-worn
They are part of the restoration so they aren’t as old as some.
What is it about gargoyles! I love them evertime/where I see them!
There is something quite fascinating about them.
Ha ! I love the first gargoyle!
Isn’t that a dead chicken rubber dog toy that he’s holding?!
Chew chew chew…
There is something quite disturbing about that one!
Why do they always have to look so ferociously horrible, Cherie?
The popular view for those on churches is that they are that way to ward of the evil spirits. Another view is that they scare the people into attending church.
Now a friend of mine could offer a different view on why they look like that in some instances (not necessarily on a church).
Ah they are fine examples of the gargoyler’s art!
They are jolly fine sculptures aren’t they?
Those gargoyle’s reminds me of the Disney movie my girls loved, The hunchback of Notre Dame. I half expect them to start to talk
Ha Ha! I see what you mean
Here’s a silly general knowledge question for you, but are they really gargoyles? Its this kind of information which can win you pub quizzes, you know
They are grotesques, which emerged from gargoyles. Originally gargoyles where functional waterspouts to deflect water from a building.
Gargoyles in their original function go back to ancient Egypt, but in those days they were displayed as animals and not so grotesque…
You’re correct, naturally! You’re on my team the next time there’s a pub quiz!
If you can keep up with the boozing, that is!
I am still more measured than you
