The entrance leaflet to the garden states that it is one of the oldest Arboreta in Britain and gives a brief background detail of the delights that are in store:
The Arboretum was originally planned by Earl Mountnorris around 1800, and it is thanks to his botanical knowledge, discoveries , and foresight, that the Arboretum is as it is today. Although Arley became highly renowned for its exotic and rare tropical plants by the 1840’s it is the specimen trees that have stood the test of time, now being considered to be one of the country’s finest tree collections.

No house, just the gardens, the arboretum and the tea room. A lovely place to visit.
Oh. That final photo is outstanding. The glorious Autumn colour in sharp contrast to the delicious textures of grey stone, with flowing water too. Gorgeous.
…and the grey, perhaps pollarded, trees. Strange but nice. Do you know what they are?

They are pollarded trees and I am not sure what they are you can see them in leaf in the third photo in Bernard’s post (see above)

Hello Don & Cherie.
A few of these great big leaves fluttered down as I played underneath. At a first guess, I thought them Plane trees (Platanus x acerifolia) as in the London Plane. I am no expert but they certainly had a Maple shaped leaf and could be Aceraceae (Maple family). of which there are many varieties.
I looked up these ‘big words’ in my book on trees!
