The Town Hall has been central to life in Durham city for more than 650 years. Learn about the powerful Prince Bishops, the evolution of local government and the historic and ongoing roles of the Mayor and Mayor’s Bodyguard. Since the 14th Century the Trade Guilds and Freeman of Durham have met in the Guildhall, a tradition they continue to this day.
Other displays showcase colourful local characters such as Joseph Boruwlaski (1739 – 1837). The 3ft tall ‘Little Count’ who retired to Durham in 1790 after performing at the grandest Royal courts of Europe.

Durham Town Hall

what a fascinating place! i liked the paintings on the wall and also the stained glass work – a bit unusual with the troops though.
It is a hidden gem. The outside of the building gives no clue to what is held within.
I went to a Summer Academy 20 years ago, going on every tour of Durham and nearby cities and towns. The town hall was a real delight, Elizabethan on top and more late Victorian on the ground level. I am pleased the trade guilds can use the building, to stop it being exclusively available to the city’s elite.
It is free entry for anyone to visit and the interior is a hidden surprise
I wish more town halls would open like this one in Durham for the general public to visit. The last town hall that I was trying to visit, was Lancaster Town Hall. But the receptionist told me that I would have to make an appointment. I was there only for that day, so maybe next time.
I tend to do research before I visit places to see what is available to visit and on what basis. This became more difficult during the 2020 & 2021 lockdowns. Hopefully things will get more back to normal and planning visits will be less problematic.
