On Saturday I attended a planned celebration trip to Alton Towers.  I am not a fan of roller-coaster rides etc. but there were other opportunities there for me to enjoy ;-)

The gardens were one of my enjoyments although I had to do a little detour when a group of (eight) Neanderthals were yelling to me from the other side of the small lake…    I am sure they were just being stupid on the way through the garden to their next adventure in the theme park, but it would have been unwise of me as a lone female to take any chances.  Survival techniques kicked in and I retreated into the tree line out of sight.

I was supposed to meet up with the rest of my party for lunch.  I went back to an easy to find location close to where the others were so I could meet them after they had finished on their ride, after much queuing…  The signposting and mapping are not great, you have be familiar with the park to understand how to get to everything.

They didn’t quite understand where I was waiting, which was a couple of minutes away.  Things and timings got complicated so I suggested they did their own thing for lunch.

I caught up with them later ;-)

Sunday was supposed to be a chill out day but I found myself in the National Cold War exhibition.

Where did my weekend go :-/

St Oswald’s Church is situated opposite the entrance to Bolton castle. The church dates back to the 14th century, although some of the carved stones in the tower may date back to the 12th century.

Bolton Castle dominates a small village near to Leyburn.  The castle is invisible as you approach it by road but as you turn the corner there it is, a very impressive view of the castle towering over you.

The village seems to have some unusual inhabitants…

The Vineyard isn’t quite in keeping with the location but it is in keeping with the castle and it’s reconstruction:

Vineyard

Vines were first brought to this country by the Romans after AD280 when Emperor Probus decreed that vines could be grown outside Italy to give the troops something to do when they were not on duty. Although historically there would not have been a vineyard this far north, the one recently established in the lee of the castle is stocked with modern hybrid, frost hardy and early ripening variety of red grape, Vitus Vinifera x Vitis Amurensis. In time, this small vineyard should produce up to 1000 bottles of wine per year.

Just beyond the stone wall in the second picture you can see a glimpse of the maze:

The private maze was planted in time to reach maturity for the year 2000 millennium celebrations.
