The more a human being feels himself a self, tries to intensify this self  and  reach a never-attainable perfection, the more drastically he steps out of the centre of being.

Mottled Pebble

Today, just after lunch I sat on my garden bench watching and listening to the birds singing there hearts out. I went inside for something and when I came out I noticed a small speckled grey pebble near to the bench. I paused, I didn’t remember seeing it when I was gardening earlier in the day. As I paused I noticed that the pebble had two eyes and realised that it was a small frog in repose.

Poorly Frog

The moment gave me great joy after and upsetting experience where I spotted a smaller frog moving towards me as I sat on my garden bench a couple of days ago.

On that occasion I moved to one side so as not to scare him, he made a few more steps (still in my direction even though I had moved) before becoming still. Bless him he had passed away at my feet. He had a poorly leg so I think he had perhaps been the victim of a bird or cat.

Garden Pathway from My Patio Chair

Later this afternoon whilst Mr C and I were playing a board game on the patio, I noticed a movement on our garden path beyond. A tiny frog (think tadpole that just gained his legs) was taking high leaps across the pathway landing in the grass where he blended into the background never to be seen again.

Crypt of All Saints

Like a medieval chapel, it is the first chapel in an English cathedral designed as a columbarium, a resting place for the ashes of the dead, whose names are engraved in the stone walls.*

Rivers and rocks and trees have always been talking to us, but we’ve forgotten how to listen.

Cherry Blossom

Today I needed to get a loaf of bread and to post a couple of letters. The weather was glorious so rather than drive I decided to combine my trip with a local walk. I took the quieter routes that gave me opportunities for social distancing if I met someone coming in the other direction.

I was reminded on two occasions of why I am reluctant to venture out. Some people really don’t get the social distancing thing.

The first such instance was when I encountered someone coming towards my on a mobility scooter. I stepped onto the grass next to the pathway and as he sailed past he said to me ‘I don’t bite you know’.

The second instance was a little bit more tricky. A jogger was running towards me huffing and puffing and I needed to cross the road (or at least be in the middle of the road) to provide a suitable distance. Just at that moment the road which had been quiet until then was suddenly busy. The jogger couldn’t care less and carried on at pace huffing and puffing.

During my walk I was able to visit my local pools. I had to walk in the opposite direction than I usually do to avoid people who were sitting on the benches sunning themselves! I liked the change of perspective, seeing the pools from a different angle.

Stepping Stones

Due to taking a different pathway I found some secret bluebells which was a pleasant surprise. I had become resigned to not seeing any this year.

On my way back home I walked past the lovely tribute that Balfour Beatty, in conjunction with our local council have paid to our NHS workers. Painted on the entrances and exits to our local hospital are the words ‘Thank You NHS’.

Yesterday, two weeks behind schedule in my #walk1000mile challenge I reached 300 miles. Many of my recent walks have been around my garden. Over the Easter weekend the leaves on ‘My Oak Tree’ have exploded into life. Truly amazing!
I bought my 200 mile treat on my last excursion before we were requested to stay at home as much as possible.

The bird bath has been a delight, my garden birds love it. I put it quite close to my house and patio wondering if that would put them off visiting. It didn’t.

The first visitor was a Wren followed by: magpies, a blackbird, a robin, a collared dove, a blackbird & a sparrow sharing the space, 2 Goldfinches and a fleeting visit by a blue tit.
Sometimes they came for a drink but quite often they came to splash around in the bath. The birds are such a delight.

Now I wonder what should I choose for my 300 mile treat…

As the weather is warming up maybe something to do with ‘fine dining’ on my patio; I have a couple of ideas in mind

Chapel of the Holy Spirit

The open arcaded design of the new St George’s Chapel allows a view through to the upper part of the Chapel of the Holy Spirit beyond.*
