The fine woodland walk led us to the secret garden:
There is the Walled Garden, half a mile from the house through the East Wood, opening up like a secret suddenly revealed. Developed with flowers and shrubs, rather than kitchen produce, by the National Trust, this garden still retains its intimacy and has colour all year round. On the terrace is the hot-house, typically Edwardian, with giant fuchias, begonias and terracotta urns from Italy.*
