If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.

Squatter Cottage

This cottage has only three rooms and was once home to a family of nine.  Originally the cottage would have had an earth floor, this was subsequently bricked over and later tiled.  Where the cottage was originally situated, the nearest supply of fresh water was from a well that was half a mile away.

Memorial Bench

I was interested to see a recent post on the Attingham Park Warden’s blog regarding a survey of the parks benches. I do love to ‘sit and rest a while‘ when I go out and about on my travels ;-)

This week I have also finished writing up the ever-exciting Attingham Bench Survey! Ok, so there are more interesting aspects of the job, but a regular check of all our seats and benches is necessary. A fascinating fact for you – not including the 100 chairs outside the Tea Room or the 40 outside the Carriage House Cafe, there are 102 seats across the park, gardens and around the mansion. I have sat, bounced, wiggled and wriggled on all of them to check for sturdiness and comfort, and looked over them to judge their appearance.

I had no idea there were quite so many benches around the estate, I think I need to do a bit more exploring ;-)

Lady Berwick  had the names of her deceased dogs inscribed on the top of this bench in their memory, it is situated at the back of the house.
